FREEDOM RINGS 1776 is a conservative voice, defending the views of those who still believe in the constitution and opposing any and all who would lead us from our tried and true beliefs. We who still believe in the spirit of 1776 must oppose anyone who would set this nation on a course that will fundamentally transform America.
REMEMBERING A HERO Submitted by Shannon Ward
On August 5, 2014 we, as a nation, were notified of the death of a man who served his country proudly since 1980, in the United States Army. Major General Harold J. Greene was killed in Afghanistan by a member of the Afghan Security Forces. As Major General he is the highest ranking military official to die on foreign soil under hostile conditions since the Vietnam War. He is also the highest ranking military member to die since since Lt. General Timothy Maude, who died as a result of the hostile act of September 11, 2001.
Major General Greene was born February 11, 1959 at time of his death on August 5, 2014 he was 55 years old. In those 55 years he served his country in the United States Army. In that time he had earned several awards including the Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal. He was well educated, with a Bachelor's degree in Material Engineering, Master's degrees including Material Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. He also had a PhD in Materials Science. His education also included many from the military. Engineer Officer both basic and advanced course, Defense System Management. He also had a Master in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College.
He is survived by his wife Sue Meyers, a doctor, son, Matthew Greene, a Lt. in the United States Army and a daughter Amelia Greene.
From the White House we heard very little about this man who served his country and achieved so many accomplishments. Instead his death is not addressed by the Commander in Chief at all. His death is more like a foot note in the busy schedule of Obama between his fund raisers and golf games. He didn't even go to meet the body of our returned veteran at Dover Air Force Base when he returned home in his flag draped coffin. Where was Kerry? Where was Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, or Joint Chief of Staff Chair Martin Dempsey?
Everyone says it is the optics that are the problem. Optics for this is obvious. A family grieving, a son in military uniform next to his fathers casket on bended knee. The other optic is that of the President in a golf cart and teeing off yet again. I am embarrassed to say that this person is a representative of our country. I am appalled that the death of pop idols and celebrities get more attention than that of a military officer. I am angry that no less than 3 representatives of the administration went to MO. after an 18 year old was shot and killed by a law officer and it appears that the 18 year old was someone who stole property and strong armed a much smaller person who attempted to stop him.
Yet no one from the administration went to represent the country that Major General Greene was willing to give his life for. Going where he was directed to go, into harms way, at the behest of his superiors including the Commander in Chief. Flags were not even directed to fly at half staff out of respect for the man who believed in this country. The optics of this is an example of what I deem total contempt for our military and those who fight for the freedom and safety of our country.
